Venue: Cobham Hilton, Seven Hills Road South, Cobham, KT11 1EW Map Time: 09:00 - 14:00 Over the past ten or so years there has been an explosion of theories about leadership with an accompanying and ever burgeoning canon of books and research papers on the subject. The majority focus on the development of skills in the individuals who are to take the pole position, and drawing on wide ranging examples from business, sport, the arts etc. One frequently cited example is the relationship between the conductor and the orchestra. Indeed many conductors have been quick to exploit this new avenue as an adjunct to their own promotion. The purpose of this presentation will be to right the balance and talk not of what it is to lead, but what it means to be led. we will examine some of the hidden and highly refined processes of communication and team work generated by musical ensembles independent of the conductor and explore their relevance in influencing better leadership practice in business. Michael Spencer
Michael Spencer was a member of the London Symphony Orchestra for 14 years working with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir George Solti, Pierre Boulez, and John Williams. He subsequently became Head of Education at the Royal Opera House, leaving to work independently as the creative director of Creative Arts Net (www.creative-arts.net) and managing director of the corporate communications consultancy Sound Strategies (www.sound-strategies.co.uk) with clients ranging from InterContinental Hotel Group to Mars. He has been education advisor to the Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras for 12 years, and recently was appointed as streategic advisor to the Orquestra Simfonica del Valles, Spain. Still a performer, he devotes more time to jazz, reserving his sole classical involvement to playing chamber music with the Empress of Japan. http://www.sound-strategies.co.uk/

Venue: The Bath House, 96 Dean Street, London, W1D 3TD Map Time: 18:15 - 21:30 What do you do when you're stuck for ideas? Come and learn a simple and easy technique that you can use at any time and anywhere to access your creativity and experience a Eureka! moment. Gia says: "In 1994 I was trained as a facilitator to run major BPR projects. Though the methodology I used was considered to be the best available in a study conducted by the Gartner Group, it was very obvious to me that something was missing. There were three phases to a project: Analysis, Redesign and Implementation. What was missing was some way of stimulating creativity between the analysis and the redesign phases. You can't just snap your fingers and get people to 'think out of the box'. You need to access parts of the brain that their normal work activity doesn't reach. So I looked at what was available and developed a creativity workshop as a bridge between the two phases. This evening we will apply just one of the techniques developed by Edward de Bono, a true innovator in this field." Cost: RG Members: £15, Non-members: £20 . Payment: at the event by cash or cheque.
